No Shame

That’s the problem.

Americans no longer have a sense of shame.

I just watched an interview with Senator Tom Coburn about the idea of extending unemployment benefits.  Asked if it might cause people to have less incentive to find a a job, the senator replied,

“I reject the idea that the majority of people on unemployment wouldn’t rather have a job.  They’d all rather have a job.  …Think about the human dignity there.”

I reacted rather strongly to that.  It reminds me a whole lot of the argument that was once used for welfare when it was initiated:  “Get real!  Single moms aren’t going to just keep having babies without getting married.  They would have to depend on the system to support them.  No one wants to be in that situation.”  No one expected that the system would be abused because people would be ashamed to.

As they should be.  But are they?  No, many aren’t at all.  Today it has become standard procedure in many neighborhoods.  Many people simply have never been taught any other way.

Unemployment is the same way.  I have known people, even in my tiny, sheltered nook of the world, who are more than happy to collect unemployment for long periods of time without even looking for a job.  The senator has his head in the clouds if he really believes that everyone would rather have a job.

Today my husband heard a man loudly proclaiming to a friend that he wouldn’t get his driver’s license back for awhile because he had a DUI.

Where is the shame?

Americans used to have dignity.  They used to be eager to work, to make a name for themselves.  They were ready to sacrifice if necessary, but even when times were tough, their dignity was evident.

No more.

Once this country survived a depression because its people were tough.  Now they whine because the government isn’t taking good enough care of them.

Where is the shame?

I'm a wonderer. I spend a lot of time mulling, pondering, and cogitating. This is just a place to park some of those thoughts.

I agree too. I wish everyone would be inspired to work on their own. Our country would be better.

Your post reminds me of a quote I recently posted on my FB.  I’m on a Nixon kick these days:”We must always remember that America is a great nation today not because of what government did for people but because of what people did for themselves and for one another.” (Richard M. Nixon)A girlfriend recently became a foster mom, and she’s gotten to see a side of our society that really is sickening. It is really AWFUL what we have done, allowing people to not work.  Children are conceived just so people can maintain their benefits.  It should be a crime.  The world is rotting in sin. We don’t realize what a blessing it is to feel ashamed. God have mercy.
