The Stages of Truth

All truth passes through three stages.

First, it is ridiculed,
second, it is violently opposed,
third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

–Arthur Schopenhauer

Thought-provoking, yes?

Anyone have an example?  Anyone disagree?

Side note for those who are interested:

We have gotten over 45 inches of snow already this year, which is about half of our usual total for the entire year, and it’s not even winter yet!    WOW!  We’ve actually had over 23 inches just during the first 10 days of December–amazing!

I'm a wonderer. I spend a lot of time mulling, pondering, and cogitating. This is just a place to park some of those thoughts.

@AngelAware – No doubt!  Rain in the winter is purely disgusting!  There ought to be a law against it!    And it’s supposed to freeze tomorrow, so won’t that be a horrid mess?  Ick.

  3. I can only think of an obvious one right now – when Columbus declared the world to be round!  🙂

  4. OK.  I’m going to go ahead and say it, despite the fact that I know you will TOTALLY expect something like this from me.  The example that I would give as a truth that passes through these three stages is this:  The Old German Baptist Brethren Church is a spiritually toxic cult.

  5. the_grat says:

@davidpendleton - and @homefire -ok… is no one going to get the obvious parallel pertaining to the founding of our own nation ??’we hold these truths to be self evident, that all men were created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”did this concept not meet with ridicule from the king of england, and then violence, and then set in permenance in the declaration of our independence ??and davidpendelton (the poster before me), i do not know you, so with all due respect, if these aforementioned truths are indeed truth, and all men ARE equal and have the right to pursue their own life and happiness, that includes the old german baptist brethren church, and you must learn to forgive them, in order to truly have your own liberty.

  6. homefire says:

@the_grat – Good point!  A self-ruled free republic was a crazy notion at that time, and I don’t believe it would ever work except in a godly nation.  Which of course, explains why our government is going down the tubes today…So you brought the new year in with xanga, huh?    Have a good one, girl!
