A bit from my son’s fifth grade vocabulary book that I think is neat.

[The word liberty is] formed from the Latin liber, which means “free.”  It’s interesting to note that the Latin word for “book” is also liber.  (A Library is a place where books are kept.)  There is a clear connection between books and freedom.  A person who cannot read is in a kind of prison; learning to read sets the mind free to explore the world and everything in it.

Cool, huh?  That would explain why it was illegal to teach slaves to read.

I'm a wonderer. I spend a lot of time mulling, pondering, and cogitating. This is just a place to park some of those thoughts.
